Letting Go

My toddler started Parent’s Day Out two weeks ago and I can’t even handle it. Porter is very clingy and cries when I step outside to check the mail. Being a work-from-home mom, I need a little break to get some of my work done and it will be a good experience for him to become more independent. This Parent’s Day Out that he goes to is great! It is only for three hours at a time, two days a week. Being a former elementary school teacher, I got him ready for his “first day of school” and maybe went a little overboard.

First, he needed a backpack. Luckily, we already had the perfect little Mini Be for him. It’s the perfect size! His supply list consisted of snacks, bug spray, sunscreen, a change of clothes, diapers, and wipes. They also suggested a comfort object. These things fit perfectly in that backpack! I am even able to send him with small water bottles that fit in the side pockets. He looks so grown up with his backpack on and it makes me want to cry. Seriously. I cried when I dropped him off for the first time.

Motherhood is just the craziest thing. I want to be with him every second of every day, but I also want my space. I want him to reach his milestones, but I don’t want him to grow up. I want him to play independently, but I also melt when he grabs my hand and pulls me to the floor to play cars with him. I want him to eat all alone and hold his spoon, but I miss putting his bib on and feeding him.

When I dropped him off on his first day, I felt like I was dropping him off at college. He grew 10 years in 10 seconds. He doesn’t cry anymore when I drop him off. He has made friends. He has moments and experiences without me. He has a backpack hook with his name on it. He is practically an adult!

I am looking forward to his independence and hoping this transition helps him to be less clingy. Moms with clingy babies, what have you done to help your child be more independent?
